Making a Difference in Canada’s Health Care Supply Chain
As Canada’s leading health care shared services organization, Mohawk Medbuy (MMC) is committed to driving an equitable and sustainable future. With a focus on environmental stewardship, social responsibility and effective governance, we’re actively supporting change that provides value to our Members, while balancing business and ESG considerations.
Environmental, Social & Governance – Why it’s important
The environmental impact of Canada’s health care system is significant – accounting for approximately 5% of the national emissions total, according to Cascades. The health care industry faces a unique paradox: while its primary goal is to improve human health, its operations unintentionally contribute to environmental harm, which may have a negative impact on human health.
At MMC, our ESG strategy is focused on three pillars to create a more sustainable and equitable health care system for current and future generations:
Member Support
Supplier Engagement & Collaboration
Clinical ESG Advancement
Supporting Our Members’ ESG Journeys
As a customer-centric organization, MMC is strategically aligned to the needs of our Members and is fully invested in supporting them on their ESG journeys. We’ve developed a comprehensive ESG program for our Members with resources, tools, collaborative platforms and innovative solutions structured in the six areas of our ESG White Glove Member Support Model.
Education: Members can access complimentary
training and educational resources designed to support ESG planning and organization-wide alignment.
Tools & Resources: Members are empowered to advance their ESG journeys with industry guidebooks, templates, and MMC-developed tools for RFx practices located within a centralized platform.
Clinical ESG Support: Members can access clinically curated ESG training, external resources, clinical research, and committee-led initiatives designed to support clinicians in building a healthier, more sustainable future.
Collaboration & Best Practices: Members can connect with and learn from industry colleagues through ESG chat boards while following progress made by the ESG Member Council.
Innovation & Sustainability: Members can learn how innovation and ESG principles converge with a focused view of sustainability-friendly products and services on MMC contracts and agreements.
Supplier Management & Reporting: A repository of data to provide Members with insights into supplier ESG relevant information, reporting, ESG goals, performance, risk management practices, and beyond.
Making Progress Through Collaboration
MMC’s comprehensive ESG program is designed to facilitate meaningful action across Member and supplier organizations – and is constantly evolving with the dynamic nature of ESG. Creating a sustainable supply chain and health care system in Canada requires a shared commitment. That’s why we’re focused on facilitating collaboration across the industry through the following initiatives:
ESG Member Council: Provides a forum for ESG collaboration and the sharing of best practices and measurable action.
ESG Section of our Online Portal: Provides resources, industry tools and best practices for MMC Members to advance their ESG efforts, share success stories, and access MMC-developed materials, such as our 10-Step Guide to Getting Started on ESG.
ESG Member Working Groups: Facilitate ESG initiatives across Member organizations to drive quantifiable impacts.
ESG Clinical Committee: Our newest initiative offers a place for clinicians who are passionate about ESG to collaborate with industry colleagues and bring meaningful change to the front lines of hospital patient care.

Fighting Against Forced and Child Labour
In May 2023, the Government of Canada introduced Bill S-211, Fighting Against Forced Labour and Child Labour in Supply Chains Act. The Act came into force on January 1, 2024 and includes reporting requirements for certain government institutions and other entities. Preventing and reducing the risk of forced labour and child labour in the health care supply chain is an ongoing area of corporate commitment for Mohawk Medbuy.
